About
My understanding of clay comes from studying the BC potters who thrived during the 1960s back-to-the-land movement of West Coast ceramics. I grew up playing with river clay in South Vancouver and studied ceramics at Concordia University Montreal, Penland School of Crafts North Carolina, and graduated with a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2017. Following that, I had the privilege of receiving a BC Arts Council Early Career Development Grant to pursue a ceramic apprenticeship with the Ngan family on Hornby Island focusing on production throwing and natural mineral testing. I have since done international artist residencies in Denmark and Berlin. My tableware is strongly influenced by minimalist, Modernist approaches to simplistic design. I throw each piece on the wheel and hand glaze in a colourful palette of personal recipes. Monochrome glazing and limited decoration emphasises the thrown form to preserve movement and evidence of the hand and mind in motion. My designs have been published in House & Garden, UK Vanity Fair and are collected internationally. Kate Metten Ceramics was the 2022 recipient of BC Achievement Foundation’s Judson Beaumont Award for Applied Art and Design.

These glazes have been tested and perfected over many years to ensure consistency in surface quality, food safety and texture. However, there will always be slight variations in glazes from batch to batch. For this reason, we do not offer custom glazes at this time and we ask that you choose from our current selection when doing wholesale orders. Thank you!
